ESTABLISHMENT OF MODERN SKILLS CENTRES IN ENUGU STATE

The Federal Government in its bid of fighting massive unemployment has decided to set up a skills acquisition centre in each of the three senatorial zones in six states. The pilot states are Enugu, Edo, Gombe, Benue, Ogun and Katisna States. As earlier stated, the FG on realization of the fact that most of our youths are unemployed because the do not possess marketable skills. In this line, decided to address this issue through trainings in acquisition of various skills at almost no cost to the person. The unemployed person who must be desirous in acquiring a particular skill will be recruited and trained on the skill of interest after which he/she will be either marketable or become employable.

This onerous task of combating massive unemployment through trainings in skills acquisition among others is the major assignment of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

In Enugu State, the three centres chosen for the establishment of these centres are:

1. Enugu North Senatorial Zone: UNDP/Igbo Eze North Skills Centre Ogrute, Enugu Ezike.

2. Enugu East Senatorial Zone: Nkanu West Skills Centre, Agbani.

3. Enugu West Senatorial Zone: Aninri West Skills Centre Nkuesha Nenwe.

Rehabilitation works at these centres have been completed and they are presently being equipped. This is a Millennium Development Goals’ (MDGs) sponsored project.

Trades/skills to be taught at the centres are: Computer Operations/Maintenance, GSM Repairs, Welding (Gas &Electric) Autotronics (Specialized auto-mech) and cosmetology. The training period in the first instance is six months. A total of 250 persons will be trained per centre, making a total of 750 in the state. The trainees shall be paid stipends during the period of training while the trainers who are presently undergoing Train-the –trainers’ (TOT) course at various centres shall be paid allowances by the NDE.

It is expected that about 40% of the trainees who show outstanding performance during the period of training shall be supported by the NDE with either grant of soft loans with which to set up their own workshops.

It is the expectations of government that this laudable programme will go a long way in both fighting the scourge of unemployment as well as curb the rural-urban drift in the society.

Provisions have been put in place for a very smooth take-off early in December haven completed registration at the three centres. The expectation of govt from the host communities is basically the security of the equipment delivered and installed at the centres. We have been talking with the LGA chairmen, Administrators and Town Unions in this regard. It is the hope of the NDE that the various host communities who automatically inherits these items make adequate plans for its continuity by introducing and other trades of special interest in each locality.

This seems the first outstanding project from the present govt to our dear town Nenwe. These are all the things we prayed for and more will surely come with the help and prayer of all of us.

I must have to apologize to members of NOL for my very very long silence. It never went into extinction but that is one of those things. Keep praying for those us around home and keep giving us encouragement.

NB: The centre is located beside Late Chief Esom Alinta’s house. It Is the former Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah Witness at Nkwuesha.

Thank you all for keeping the flag of NOL flying. Is it Charlie MBC, Okwuruoha Cy Oleh, Dr. Onuora, Jerry Stepnens or my wife Philo? “Aguwa ndi oma, aba l’iro”

Hopefully I shall try to keep you posted with happenings at the centre.

LOVE U ALL!!!!

Pat MBC.
