LONG JOHN SILVER & I (The SP)

The war was fought and everyone lost as in  many wars . I found myself in Awgu County  Sec Sch.(1972)and Jon was in class 4   (with my cousin Law Nwarueze). He  was  the deputy SP. The next year he was overwhelmingly and almost  unanimously voted for the post of  the SP. 

County had the air and hope equal to the one in Nigeria when Obi was winning with the obidents. It was a beautiful time.

Everyone attended the morning  assembly to see this  handsome SP that had  much swags. His English  was better and more Queenly than what you hear now in London . How he did that  is still an enigma.His uniform fitted him more than ordinary and he had a way of carrying his frame which we all called 'Pirates walk' and imitated it. I remember my mom observed I was walking differently and cautioned me sternly. 

He didn’t carry the SP functions  with  iron fist ; we all obeyed all rules happily…… He was loved!

We were told by some seniors that all the girls coming  from Girls schools like Queens sch. Enugu , Rosary High sch Awgu , Ovim girls , Sedess Oghe etc  to bring invitations to  parties or association events all wanted to talk with him even if he wasn't the person to receive the invitations! . The SP was popular in all the female schools who 'crushed on' him and I suppose he knew but it  didn’t  bother him…..

*MR JOHN OKECHUKWU NWARU (Pirate)*

The unexpected, sudden death of Mr. John Nwaru, the *Nenwe Icon of generosity*, Monday, October 16, 2023, has understandably, thrown our Community into a collective sense of loss and mourning. While the anguish and mourning will surely continue to linger amongst us, The NOL Board has organized and is scheduling a Catholic funeral mass to gracefully bring our official mourning period to a respectful conclusion:

PA' GODWIN NWARUEZE RIP

*A TRIBUTE  TO A NOBLE FINE-LOOKING  MAN OF TRUTH PA’ GODWIN NWARUEZE  (aka.OKONOGWU) BY THE CHUKWUBIKE FAMILY*;

Pa Godwin Nwarueze has  always  been a prominent and permanent figure in the lives  and memories of all of us in the family and the Umuekwete kindred especially those at ugwuavia in general. This straight but soft spoken   fine looking yellow  gentleman and his beautiful dark skinned   Emudo (Alinta family) wife, we were told lived  in Calabar. Their return home each time  meant festivities  to all of  us kids and the joyful companies  of their children who were of our age mates were always wonderful. 

At some point we discovered them in the  early and mid ‘60s at Onitsha  where his house was a compulsory night  stopover whenever our late father Senator MBC had  to take the pontoon to cross the Niger river en route  to Lagos  for the parliamentary (Senate) debate sessions. He  was  a business man in that city where he was mentoring many young Nenwe  businessmen and traders .   We as kids  looked forward  to this Onitsha stop-over where we met also many  members of the Nenwe community like the  ever active  Mazi Goddy Nwarunta (Barclays Bank), etc. 

Later we found him in Lagos and his residence automatically became our home in Lagos. He had  a great  sense of sacrifice  and wouldn't even mind our trooping in with friends  looking for accommodation  for justified  visits like , job search and visa / passport applications (passport office was only in Lagos then) . He treated everyone like a father and talked to us  as   if we were equals. However true to his main character he never tolerated  indiscipline and would call you out for good directions  in the slightest sign of deviance. He was what we called a straight and truthful  “no nonsense man”.  After our business in Lagos island  we would  usually go for  our lunch at his shop in Balogun. He was also mentoring many Nenwe people  in trading there again.  

Pa Nwarueze  (Goddy Nwarueze  as was fondly  called ) was  a *great father figure*  to all of  us then  and he played the role  very well whenever we stepped into Eko.

As time  passed  we the younger ones  *“baptised” him   with the alias, OKONGWU*, a sign of his significant position as our elder in the  then Lagos diaspora. He  continued  to play this role  till his  retirement and return to Nenwe about 15 years ago when he actually became the oldest  man  in our Umuekwete family,  Amabo in general and even in the  St Michaels catholic parish where he dedicated most of his  time since retirement.

It is really painful to miss our OKONGWU  but his *handsome spirit, straight forwardness, truthfulness,  and protectiveness* will continue  to live in our memories and lives.

As we commensurate with the Nwaruezes, we urge you to look beyond his death and live up the legacies he bequeathed to you his survivors. We believe he is already in the bosom of his Creator till the resurrection day. His testimonies lives after him. 

May his  soul rest in peace. Kaa lu woo!

ONWA ORIRI ALI NENWE

 With humility, but I'm delightful and genuinely glad to honour the courtesy call of Ezeali of Nenwe this afternoon at the ancient

family of Nwobodo Ede, from obeagu uhueze Nenwe for the continuation of this year feast ONWA ORIRI ALI NENWE celebration.

Earlier, today the Distinguished and eminents members of NKORO NDI ALI NENWE, on a colourful event and gathering at the compound of late Nwobodo Ede ex-Ali Chief priest, to proclaimed the official date for this year ONWA ORIRI ALI NENWE. The event attracted numerous prominent and wealthy men's in Nenwe with other clergies. 

The gathering was so mirthful and gaiety because their prepared a very edible food's and drinks with unadulterated palm wine and many more.

Consequently, the official date of this year ONWA ORIRI ALI is as scheduled as 17- 21 of October this month 2022, everyone is obligated to visit any near by Ali shrine for prayers and libations over this year ONWA ORIRI ALI.

The radio announcement will commence tomorrow by 07:30 am in owelle fm Enugu state 99:5 the frequency, through business news so tune your radio to hear the announcement.

Perhaps, Ezeali commend and encomiums appreciate everyone who contributed to make today a memorable one and urge everyone to come out in mass to observe this year ONWA ORIRI ALI as it's also part of our tradition bestowed to us by our ancestors and forefathers.

He also urge all respective community to continue with the night practice of all Nenwe traditional musics as the celebration is coming to the end.

We express optimism that this request will receive your usual expeditious consideration and look forward to see you at any Ali shrine in Nenwe in 17-21th of October 2022
